COURSES SYNOPSES

Semester Courses Synopses
1

Research Methodology

(FSG710)

This course will provide students with knowledge and exposure required on methods and ethics to carry out a scientific research. Students will be introduced to different experimental design and components involved in research proposal writing. The student will conduct a systematic research project and present the research proposal at the end of semester. The quantitative (statistical) technique will cover the multivariate analysis. It is designed for biological experiments using appropriate statistical tests. (3 Credits)

Advanced Instrumentation
(BIO711)
This course will provide the advanced practical background necessary for successful employment in the applied biology and biotechnology industry, as well as to equip students with the knowledge required to pursue advanced studies in this area. Students will take part in intensive laboratory exercises designed to introduce them to essential and advanced techniques in applied biology including the use of electron microscopes, plant transformation, cryobiology, advanced techniques in molecular biology and much more. In addition, most of the practical modules will have an associated lecture component. Also, at the end of this course students are expected to present a mini project using a selected technique. (3 Credits)
Sustainable Ecosystems
(BIO712)

This course provides opportunity for students to comprehend the concept of ecosystems and why they are important for the sustainability of biodiversity and the ecosphere. Discussions relate to history of conservation, environmentalism and sustainability. Students will also learn the ecological processes that sustain ecosystem balance and the anthropogenic activities that impacts. The effects of climate change and global warming on ecosystem processes and biodiversity are also addressed. The role of ecological economics and, local community participation is introduced as added tools for conservation. Teaching methods include case studies, lectures, laboratory time and field work.
(3 Credits)

2 Advances in Molecular Biology
(BIO721)
Advances in Molecular Biology is an upper level course, designed to give a good background in current Molecular Biology. The major themes are eukaryotic and prokaryotic DNA replication, chromosomal structure and function and gene structure and function. Students will learn from current papers in the scientific literature, and will be expected to use concepts developed in the course in class and in exams. (3 Credits)
Applied Biology Thesis I
(BIO722

This course provides advanced level training for research studies and subsequent careers in a variety of industrial, professional and academic fields. Students are required to plan their research study under the supervision of one or more lecturers in the faculty or industry. Students are expected to give oral presentation on their proposals as well as the preliminary results (if any). (13 credits)

3 Applied Biology Thesis II (BIO731)

This course provides advanced level training for research studies and subsequent careers in a variety of industrial, professional and academic fields. Students are required to carry out an approved research project under the supervision of one or more lecturers in the faculty or industry. They are required to submit a written research thesis and upon completion of a research project, a bound thesis is to be submitted to the faculty and the research outcome will be orally presented. The thesis together with an oral presentation will be assessed and graded.
(15 Credits)
